I’m a Nikonian myself (D200), but I must confess that if low light sports is your thing, you should go with Canon. Nikon is great up to around ISO 800 but beyond that, Canon provides better image quality. I’d day Nikon is usable up to ISO 1200 vs. ISO 3200 for Canon.
Both companies have a 50mm f/1.4, fast f/2.8 zooms, and enough other goodies to destroy several credit reports.
For sports you’ll probably want the 30D for its 5fps (or the virtually identical 20D at a discount.)

Question by Queen of Convenience: What type of lens (or focal range) would be best to use on my Nikon DSLR for portraits and maternity pictures?
I’m taking some maternity shots of my sister-in-law this weekend. I can possibly afford a lens for about 0-0. I have a Nikon D60, which is a beginner into the DSLR world. It’s not spectacular, but it gets the job done.
Which type of lens (zoom, standard, etc) would be best to use on it? I have the standard 18-55mm lens already.
Or does anyone have any ideas for poses or words of advice?

You want to use a moderate telephoto for portrait work. In 35mm cameras this is something like 90mm or 100mm. This ‘flattens’ the features in way that’s considered good.
I’m not sure what size the sensor is in a DSLR but I suspect it’s about equivalent to a 35mm camera, so 90mm would be about right.
